Steampunk, in a nutshell, is Victorian science fiction. The time period that steampunk focuses on is approximately 1840 to 1910. The period of 1900 to 1945 is more dieselpunk. Steampunk focuses around the use of the steam engine and how the people in the time period of the Victorian/Edwardian era might have perceived the future. The subculture is primarily based in literature, art, and technology. Fiction spurred the subculture into being with H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson, and other such avid writers of true science fiction. Steampunk now has a strong hold in the literature and arts areas of the world, as well as technology. There is a strong urge among the steampunk subculture to mod or create or decorate items to be more steampunk whether it be goggles, transportation, a house, computers, etc.
QAEL
The Queen's Arctic Expeditionary League is a steampunk society based in Fairbanks, Alaska and is the farthest north steampunk group in the United States. Our logo features two gears, a crown, and a woolly mammoth (a formerly common creature in Alaska).
